Santa Coming Early for Pets This Year

Santa will be in town for a special stopover November 29th at the Herman Prior Centre for Portage Animal Welfare Society’s Pet Pics with Santa fundraiser! He will be taking a break from his Christmas preparations to meet your pets or kids for a photo from 11 am to 2 pm this Saturday. Various photo size and format options are available, starting at just $5.00!
PAWS’ adoptable pets will also be in attendance from 10 am to 2 pm, hoping to steal a heart and find a home this winter. There are 6 dogs and 15 cats of all shapes and sizes looking for their forever families this holiday season! You can meet the dogs at the Herman Prior Centre, and the cats will be waiting for you at the brand new Animal Adoption Centre located at 121 – 12th Street NE.
If you would like to channel your inner Santa this season, the PAWS pets have a Wish List! The cats have asked for canned food (pate-style - the shredded or chunky stuff isn’t as tasty), exciting toys like tunnels and scratching posts, litterboxes, and litter (unscented, clumping preferred). The dogs have medium/large Kongs, durable chew toys (rubber or rope), small/medium nylon collars & leashes, haltis, and training collars, and treats like Dentabones or Dentastix on their list. If you’d like to help the Adoption Centre, dog and cat beds would make it much cozier, and a window to install in the kennel area would really brighten the place up. A sturdy garden shed for outdoor storage, heavy-duty large garbage bags, and a printer or plain white paper would help keep everything tidy and organized.
Of course, the greatest gift of all is a foster home. PAWS can only take in animals when there is an empty foster home to put them in, and more homes means more lives saved. Dogs and cats who have spent time in the pound and haven’t been claimed can be taken in for adoption if there is a foster home ready for them. All food, supplies, and vet work are provided, so there is no cost to the foster family for anything their guest will need during their stay. There is also a network of training tips and support available through the other foster families and board members – fostering is supposed to be a fun and rewarding experience, and help is always available if you hit a snag. If you’re looking for a way to make a difference to the stray and abandoned pets of Portage, join the PAWS foster family and feel the love from a rescued animal today!
