Portage Atom 4 wins gold in Altona
Alex Van Deynze (R) scores on the Morden Hawks to help his team on their way to the gold medal in Altona.
The weekend of December 7 and 8 saw the Portage Atom 4 Terriers travel to the Altona Atom Bronze tournament in Altona, Manitoba. Portage split their two games on Saturday forcing them to have to earn their way back into medal contention. The Portage squad started with two wins on Sunday morning setting up a match against host Altona. The Terriers came out fast and built up an 8-1 first period lead en route to a 17-2 victory. Portage met Steinbach in the semi-finals and out-shot the Millers 42-14 in a 9-1 win. The gold medal game was between Portage and the same Winkler team that had handed them their only defeat of the tournament the day before. In the first game between the two teams the Terriers dominated every aspect of the game except on the scoreboard, out-shooting the Flyers 42-16 but ending up going down by a 4-2 score. The second meeting saw Portage play strong team defense despite using only three defensemen - Brandon Ferg, Darien Schaan and Jacob Younka. The strong backchecking of the forwards kept Winkler from mounting any sustained offense and centre Ryland Semaniuk tallied 7 times, including the first goal 20 seconds into the first period, to carry Portage to a 9-2 victory and the gold medal.
