STARBEAR the official mascot of the STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) enjoyed his visit to Portage la Prairie riding with his hosts the Canadian Northern Lights Drill Team.

STARBEAR was in Portage la Prairie last night to participate in the annual Parade. This was STARBEAR's first visit to Portage la Prairie so he was escorted by the Canadian Northern Lights Drill Team on their float. He danced most of his way through Portage atop a float.

STARS is the new air ambulance here in Manitoba and he helps spread the word with the help of the Drill Team as to how important this time saving service is to the people of Manitoba.

STARS offers hope to families of critically injured or sick people in Manitoba and the service survives on some government funding, but with a minimum $10 million dollars per year operating cost, relies on the support of the communities by fundraisers and donations.

The Canadian Northern Lights drill team has partnered with STARS Winnipeg to help spread the word of how important the air ambulance is to people here. They have been fund-raising regularly for STARS and have been showing STARBEAR around the Central Plains area.

So far the drill team has been able to raise $1000 for STARS and will be presenting a cheque to them in the coming week.

They are also announcing that in January 2013 they will be again doing another fund-raiser that will see 100% of the proceeds going directly to STARS. Details of the fundraiser will be posted shortly on their Facebook page as well as a link will be provided for people to donate to STARS directly.
