Re: QUESTIONS ABOUT FILIPINO NURSES

I came upon the article as I was searching the internet about RHA hiring filipino nurses from the Philippines and what i read from F.M King's comments saddened me.

Well, for people who are curious, Philippines' mode of instruction from Kinder up to College/University or Post Grad studies are in English. The only class we do have that is not English is the "Filipino subject". Those people who are fortunate enough to finish their studies are very fluent in our second language (which is english---both in oral or written). If you talk to a Grade 1 pupil in English he/she will talk back in English.

As for Nursing, our standard is based on the North American Nursing. We use the Nursing books that United States and Canada use. Our RN exam is based on Philippines and North American setting. The principles are the same. Hospital charting/notes are in English. The reason why we have 400,000 unemployed nurses is because we have more nursing schools than the US or Canada therefore we produce more (about 5,000 or more/year). Our hospitals cannot hire all the nurses who pass their licensure exam simply because of the overflow (plus we are just a small country) that is why a lot of nurses look for job abroad.

I, for one, came from the Philippines in 2001 through WRHA's initiative to hire nurses from the Philippines to fill the shortage here in Winnipeg. So far, I've been here 7 years going 8 and I had no complaints about my English. My patients and my co-workers perfectly understand me and were grateful that filipino nurses would take such a big leap to leave their families behind for a better future and to help Canada's shortage of nurses. We take pride on our culture and the way we work with diligence, compassion, perseverance and the ability to perform to the best of our capability/ability. F.M.King may not be interested but he/she will know one day what and how a filipino nurse works once he/she is under a filipino nurse's care.

Canadians should be in shock about what is happening in the government today. A democratically elected party by the majority of Canadians is now about to be thrown out in favor of leaders of the other 3 parties that could not win the election on their own merits. As the Harper government realizes that throwing money at an economy that will take its own time to turn around the NDP and Liberals see differently. Dion and Layton want to follow the failed past of the U.S.A. by bailing out companies that do not deserve to be and to date have put in trillions of dollars into the economy only to watch it fall further into a recession. No money will help turn around the economy as it has proven in the past. It is a cycle that will turn itself around. The people not the government will bring it out of the recession. Canada's economy by far is in the best shape compared to most countries in the world. If Dion and Layton had their way Canada would be a socialist/welfare state. To enhance their beliefs they partener up with the BLOC which further speaks for itself. The PC's have it right, to recklessly throw taxpayers dollars at a problem that is largely due to the problems in the U.S. will do no good until the U.S. clean up their act. Canadians should speak out against Dion and Layton, if we wanted them, we would have elected them. Maybe now Dion will get his way and tax the gas prices.

Dear Editor I am so glad that the Portage Hospital is getting the new emergency room which will help alot it was suppose to happened when the CT Scanner was put in but slowly but surely it is coming which is great maybe someday they can fix the rest of the hospital because alot of people dont want a new hospital for some reason so this is the best next thing I have helped my community with some other family and friends and it took us a long time to get this far .So we should be thankful and greatful that we are having this done.

TO THE EDITOR:

CONSIDER WESTERN SEPARATION

THE TIME HAS COME FOR WESTERN CANADIANS TO SEPARATE FROM THE REST OF CANADA! Confederation was supposed to be an ALLIANCE of the Provinces that would be good for every Canadian. This has not been the case for the West for many years. Due to the large populations of Quebec and Ontario they have usually elected whomever would give them the greatest advantage. Now that we have elected a Government that we had faith in, it is being overturned by the Liberals and the N.D.P. forming an UNHOLY ALLIANCE with the Bloc. Quebec has declared that they are a nation and by their own admission care only about themselves, so you can only imagine what they have been promised! WHAT THE WEST WILL HAVE IS TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION! No doubt the NEW COALITION will spend “MONEY LIKE DRUNKEN SAILORS IN QUÉBEC AND ONTARIO” in an effort to buy votes in the next election! IF THIS POWER GRAB TAKES PLACE I URGE ALL WESTERN PEOPLE TO CONTACT YOUR PREMIER AND ADVOCATE SEPARATION.

Yours Truly,
Bill Longbotham

Dear Editor With Barack Obama getting in as president I know that he has a big mess to clean up .I hope that he can stop the war and make the people grow up.I hope that it will bring the markets back up so that the farmers and keep on farming to feed the world.Because right now the markets are terrible and the farmers need those markets to go back up.The fertilizers prices have not come down and chemicals prices and now they talk of a shortage of diseal fuel like guys grow up who is playing with who ,like they are sick ,very one has to survive .If you dont have the farmers people will not survive and that is how it goes .When the grain prices where high they werent they were where they should have been so the farmers could pay for there fertilizers and chemical prices. This summer and fall the fuel prices and chemical prices is what killing the farmers. It was costing farmers $30,000.00 to $50,000.00 dollars for one to two months for fuel to take off the crops and field work which normally it would cost them the whole year for some farmers .Some farmers dont even know if they can get operating loans from the banks for next yearto keep on farming and goes for everyone ,there could be a greater shortage of food if the farmers and not keep on farming and a greater food shortage in the stores. It is also the credit companies that is killing everyone also. They are the ones that are making all of the money and chemical companies fertilizers companies fuel and gas companies they are all making the big money and not the farmers like everyone thinks that they are .People have to start to relize that it is not easy to farm in this generation .Iwish that building the new sport complex that they would build it in a few more years with the way the economy is right now but go figure .Since that the new sport complex is going on very ones taxes does that mean when there is event on there that it is going to be free for everyone and what are they going to do with the old arena no one has said what they are going to do with the building or have they .Every one in the Portage area are suffering with the economy but no one cares but I do care and it is high time everyone else does to .Lets show everyone in the Portage area does care what is going to happen with the economy and whether everyone is going to have jobs or not to go to and how are business going to survive where is the money going to come from and so forth.Pam Pugh

I see that there is no gas price-war on here in P.la P. where the price remains almost 10 cents above average and no one in the industry cares.
I am advising my friends etc. to shop at RED RIVER CO-OP in Headingly when travelinhg because they have the lowest price enroute. They don't gouge their customers as they do here in Portage.

Dear Editor with high chemical and fertilizer and fuel prices and grain prices keep falling and the Portage farmers wonder how they are going to keep on farming. Is it going to be like the dirty thirties or not that is what it seem like is the depression coming there is alot of farmers depressed already the farmers have to have the grain prices go back up in order to keep on farming and that is not just here but all over Canada Steven Harperandthe rest of thepolitians never said how they were going to help the farmers Iam very disappointed in them That should be the governments top priority since they put food on everyones table everyday So I hope the politians help the farmers because they are in desperate need.Is the farmers going have to go back to sumerfollowing that means there will be less food in the country. So I hope that the politians realize how important this situation really is ,Sincerly Pam Pugh

Shane Gibson's article on "gas price-reduction" doesn't go far enough. If Mr.Gibson were a good investigative reporter he would say that gasoline prices have dropped a bit but are still inflated by the gas stations(who price fix) and the distributors who take advantage of every little crisis that comes along to raise the price. Why does the price not drop according to Market Value ofcrude oil? The current price of crude should have the gas prices less than $1.00 , perhaps at 95 cents.
How aboutThe Graphic doing some in depth reporting to see why the prices remain high?

Dear Editor After having Cancer myself and loosing family membersand friends to Cancer this year .I want to know and other people as well what has happened to the Docotrs in the United States that knew how to cure Cancer, and why did the drug companies get rid of these doctors that knew how to cure Cancer. Please bring back these Doctors from these other countries where the drug companies have sent them to so that they can cure people .We know that they know how to cure people there is so much money being spent on Cancer and nothing is being done only the drug companies are getting richer and the chemical companies are getting richer .So bring back these doctors back to the USA or to Canada we know that you are out there and so do the drug companies.Stop all of these Billions of dollars being wasted over nothing .People these doctors know how to cure Cancer but it is the drug companies that dont want the doctors around that is the reason why people arent being treated the way they should be that is the truth. The drug companies would not be making the big money .What happen to the doctors in the sixties that knew how to treat Cancer he was sent to another country because the drug companies knew that he knew to much in how to treat cancer .Sincerly Pam Pugh
