Manitoba Métis Federation remembers their fallen

Posted By newsjunkie

What a winter wonderland out there, hey folks? But we could have done without the rain that arrived first. It is very slippery, so be extremely careful both driving and walking.
Our thoughts are with our fallen and returned soldiers at this time of year. Our veterans are getting younger all the time. It used to be when we honoured our veterans on Remembrance Day, they were from the First and Second World Wars or the Korean War.
Now, we have younger veterans from
Bosnia, and other places included in
the Gulf War. It is good to take the time to reflect on all the sacrifices that have been made by so many for us. As I laid a wreath this Remembrance Day, I remembered those who have left us, and will try to remember to be thankful we live in Canada and not in one of those wartorn nations half a world away.
The Manitoba Métis Federation Portage Local meeting is on Tuesday at 7 p.m. We will be looking for a new place to meet on Monday nights, as the bingo hall will not be available in the future due to Monday night bingo. I think Tuesday will still be alright, but if not, a notice will be on the door giving an alternate location. Our meeting should be quite interesting as we are having Roger Sabot from the Aboriginal Health Program coming to give us a short presentation. They might be looking at hiring a couple of Métis in the future through this program, so come on out and listen. This may be a career you would be interested in pursuing.
No further word on the old time dance planned for Oakville as yet. The Christmas party is set for the weekend of Dec. 13-14, depending on which day the Portage Sports and Cultural Association Centre is available. We expect our Métis dancers, our young fiddlers plus some of our older singers. This will be a potluck, so come on out and enjoy. We will confirm the date in a future column.
As of this week, the satellite office has a box in place for non-perishable goods and new unwrapped toys for donation to the Christmas hampers at the Salvation Army. Let’s make sure none of our people our hungry this Christmas and that all children have a present under the tree to unwrap.
Our condolences to the Klyne and McDonell families on the death of Verna McDonell and also to the Gladue Family on the death of Lawrence Gladue. They will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Congratulations to the Klyne family on the arrival of two more grandchildren.
Lauri Klyne and Ivy Muir are elders with the Manitoba Métis Federation.
