Celebrate the musical and visual art talents of Heather Bishop.
The Portage and District Arts Centre is pleased to present award-winning Heather Bishop in concert at the William Glesby Centre on Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Bishop will be performing songs from her latest CD, “My Face is a Map of My Time Here.” She is a well-known name at all the major Canadian folk festivals, as well as at all the children’s festivals in this country.
Her career has spanned three decades and taken her around the world. She has performed with almost every major symphony orchestra in Canada as well as a few in the United States. Heather was a regular guest performer on the internationally acclaimed Fred Penner Show. She has garnered numerous awards, including Juno nominations and Parent’s Choice Gold Awards. She has been awarded both the Order of Manitoba and the Order of Canada.
Tickets for the concert are $15 available at the arts centre, which includes a cash bar reception with Heather in the gallery following the show. Bishop’s performance opens her similarly titled portraiture exhibition, “My Face is a Map of My Time Here,” which will be on display in the gallery from Oct. 20-Nov. 28. Heather’s artwork captures the old and young in oil on canvas.
Heather notes how she has always been intrigued by people’s faces: “I feel that our faces are maps of our time here — the old in our wisdom and the young in our innocence.”
We are pleased to have Manitoba Arts Council and Century 21 Andrich Realty locally sponsoring this exhibition and performance.

It’s Reel Event time!
Come on down to the arts centre to purchase your season pass for the Reel Event, which starts on Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. with the film “Easy Virtue.” “Easy Virtue,” a comedy starring Colin Firth and Jessica Biel, tells the story of a young Englishman who marries a glamorous American. When he brings her home to meet the parents, she arrives like a blast from the future — blowing their entrenched British stuffiness out the window.
The six-movie season pass for the PDAC Reel Event is $40 and entitles you to receive a $1 discount off other regular admission movies shown at the Cinema Centre. Our films screen the third Wednesday of the month, excluding December, on the big screen at the Cinema Centre. If you can’t make all the screenings, you can lend your pass to a friend. We are thrilled to have Bjorn Christianson Q.C. Law Corp. sponsor the PDAC Reel Event again this season.

Quilting with Pat Crandell
It’s time to dust off your sewing machine and take a quilting class. On Oct. 20, from 7-9:30 p.m., it’s open studio at the arts centre with instructor Pat Crandell. For a $10 drop-in fee, you can bring in your quilting projects along with your sewing machine and work away under the helpful eye of Pat. We also have spots available in the Christmas table topper evening quilting class, which starts on Nov. 17.

Sticky Fingers Art
(parent and child class)
We now have a second class of Sticky Fingers Art for ages 2-4 with instructor Kelly Port on Thursday mornings starting on Nov. 5 for four weeks. During these classes, your child will explore the world of colour through the use of markers, crayons, chalk, paint and paper.

October weekend workshops
We have several amazing workshops happening at the arts centre this month. We still have a few spots left in the two-day Art Intensive drawing workshop with instructor Marcel Debreuil on Oct. 17 and 18 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. We also have an acrylic workshop with instructor David Cooper on Oct. 24, which is ideal for anyone who has dabbled in acrylics and is looking for a larger understanding of the medium.
Other weekend workshops happening throughout the fall are: oil painting (Bob Ross-style), framing and matting, and documenting your art. Drop by the arts centre to pick up a brochure for more details on each class and workshop, become a member and receive discounts!

Children’s music workshop
Register for the Musical Art Workshop for Youth, ages 9-13, on Nov. 21 from 1-4 p.m. with instructor Julianne Dick. Your child will explore the relationship between music and art through various activities.
Portage and District Arts Centre is located at 11-Second St. N.E., Portage la Prairie, 204-239-6029. Office and gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Check out our website: www.portageartscentre.ca
