McLennan getting ready to release CD

Melodies on the fiddle invoke a sense of heritage and pride when played in Manitoba, even among younger generations. Kelsey McLennan, 19, has been playing the fiddle for the better part of her life.

"The first time I would have played," she said, "would have been at my grandpa's birthday. I think it was Mary Had A Little Lamb."

Twelve years since strumming her first note, McLennan is preparing to release her first full-scale album, "Break Away."

"Everyone needs to relax and rejuvenate once in a while," she said regarding the meaning of the album title, "and this is my break away."

The fiddle means more to McClennan than musical instruments do to most musicians because it has played such a formidable part in many of her ancestor's lives.

In addition to her father, Larry McLennan, being the president of the Manitoba Fiddle Association, "Kelsey's great-grandfathers on both sides played the fiddle," said Kelsey's mother, Leigh Ann McLennan.
