To say that Shaye Nelissen has had her sights set on a career beyond midget hockey is a bit of an understatement.
"From pretty far back, I've wanted to take hockey as far as I can possibly go with it," the Portage la Prairie product said. "Probably since about Grade 7 or 8."
The standout blueliner on the Central Plains Capitals' female team has realized that goal, as Nelissen recently made her commitment to play for the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets starting next season.
After a tour of the school and a meet-and-greet with the Yellowjackets' coaching staff, the 17 year old was sold on the NCAA Division III school.
"A bunch of other schools did talk to me, but I went down for a tour with the coaches, and I liked how small it was," she said. "They have a really good hockey program even though it's small, and I didn't feel like I was just a number. I felt like an actual person there."
