The throne speech, read by Lt.-Gov. Philip Lee on Monday and which traditionally outlines the government's plans for the coming year, promised to organize an economic summit next year and bring together business, labour, aboriginal and local government leaders to deal with issues such as innovation, trade, skills development and investment.

Saying no to a harmonized sales tax, investing in schools, providing money for new buildings in post-secondary schools, recruiting more nurses from the Philippines, suing tobacco companies, hiring more gang prosecutors, increasing protection for victims of domestic violence, and continuing to restore Netley and Delta Marsh rounded out the laundry list of promises in the speech, among many others.

The 56 members of the legislative assembly will now spend the next eight days of the session debating the speech before breaking for the Christmas holidays.

Portage la Prairie MLA David Faurschou said he was pleased to see the government recognize, through the speech, that Manitoba will be affected by the recession.
