Changes coming to downtown Portage

Staff photo by Angela Brown...This former doughnut and coffee shop located on Saskatchewan Avenue at Third Street S.E. will be the new office of Portage la Prairie s Canadian Food Inspection Agency office in 2010.

A former restaurant will soon be the home of a new government office building in downtown Portage la Prairie.

Winnipeg developer Shindico Realty Inc. has confirmed a government agency has plans to move into the former Tim Hortons at the corner of Saskatchewan Avenue and Third Street S.E. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will be moving to the new site in the late spring of 2010.

Shindico president Sandy Shindleman is thrilled to see more activity in central Portage for business.

"It is great to see a hole filled in downtown Portage la Prairie," Shindleman said. "It is a great signature corner for them. It kind of reinforces Portage la Prairie as a place where food inspection, etc., is a high priority."

The dimensions of the building will remain at about 600 square metres (2,000 square feet) but some modifications will be made.

"We will be renovating the building to change the use from the existing restaurant to a less intensive office use," said Shindleman.

Dr. Rick James-Davies, the CFIA regional director for Manitoba, based in Winnipeg, confirmed the Portage operations will move next year.

Currently the Portage district office is located on the second floor in the Canada Post Office building downtown.

James-Davis noted the office is moving to provide more space for the staff and as an upgrade.
