WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg-based group of native day school survivors is expanding a lawsuit to include fellow survivors from across the country.
The group, known as Spirit Wind Survivors, filed a $15-billion lawsuit in Manitoba in July against the federal government, claiming they were physically and sexually abused and stripped of their culture while attending the day schools, which were similar to residential schools but allowed students to return home at night instead of boarding them on site.
The plaintiffs claim they were left out of the government's compensation package for residential school survivors.
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs issued a public notice yesterday stating the group has now opened its lawsuit to day school survivors across Canada.
Spirit Wind president Ray Mason and Joan Jack, a Manitoba-based lawyer who filed the claim, are expected to address the media today to discuss the expanded lawsuit.
