Silver cross mother Shirley Seggie laid a wreath at the citadel in Portage Alliance Church Wednesday in remembrance of her fallen son Corp. Mike Seggie, who died in Afghanistan last year.
Seggie said she was honoured to be chosen as the silver cross mother this year and was happy to see the gymnasium of Westpark School, which is attached to the church, full for Portage la Prairie's Remembrance Day Ceremony.
"It's wonderful to have a good turnout," she said. "It makes me feel proud for each and every one of them."
Seggie, from Winnipeg, said her son died on Sept. 3, 2008 in Afghanistan from wounds inflicted by an improvised explosive device.
Corp. Mike Seggie served with 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, a major unit belonging to 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group as a light armoured vehicle driver and a C-9 gunner.
Two other soldiers died in the explosion that killed Corp. Mike Seggie and five others were wounded.
This marked the first year that Seggie acted as the silver cross mother here in Portage, Bob Hay, past president of the Royal Canadian Legion in Portage, co-ordinator of the Remembrance Day ceremony in Portage and a Second World War veteran, said.
All mothers who lose children during military service receive a silver cross, he added.
