Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Hoeppner's private member's bill to abolish the long gun registry passed second reading in the House of Commons Wednesday.
A total of 164 members of Parliament voted in favour of the bill while 137 voted against it.
Along with the 143 Conservative MPs, 12 NDP members, eight Liberals, and one independent MP voted to scrap the registry.
Parties freed up their respective MPs on the private member's bill to vote however they saw fit, which is tradition when dealing with private member's bills.
"Obviously, I'm very pleased with the result," Hoeppner said over the phone from Ottawa after the vote.
The fact opposition MPs stood up and supported the bill spoke volumes as to what the majority of Canadians think of it, she said.
"It's saying the government has a bad policy, and this is bad policy," she noted.
This does not make the bill law at this point but does pave the way for Bill C-391 to proceed to Parliament's Public Safety Committee for further study.
"This is the first step," she observed.
The Public Safety Committee has to look at the bill anywhere from within 30-60 days and make a report on it, the Portage-Lisgar MP said.
