Holy grail of hockey visits Portage

The most famous trophy in the sporting world made a special stop in Portage la Prairie on Sunday, captivating fans young and old who came to see hockey's holy grail.
More than 600 people turned up at the Portage Scotiabank location to get a glimpse of the Stanley Cup, which was on display there for four hours.
"It was an excellent day of celebrating the Stanley Cup," said Scotiabank branch manager Tony Schellenberg. "We had a lot of families come in — kids, parents and grandparents, the whole realm. To see the familes come together and see the Cup, celebrate and share some stories about hockey was really great."
The Stanley Cup that appeared at the branch was in fact the real deal — the same one skated around Detroit's Joe Louis Arena by the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier this year — and not a replica like the one that is on permanent display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
"It was interesting to see all the engravings and names on the Stanley Cup, and some of the dents on it. Obviously, it's an old trophy by now," said Schellenberg, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan who spent some of the day picking out the names of some former Leaf greats that are forever etched into the rings of the coveted Cup.
