Lovely lady

Katherine Penfold

Date: Oct. 10

Showtime: 7:30 p.m.

Tickets: $12

Let’s start with our lovely lady who has performed here in her teens, and our audience raved about her then. Add a few more years of experience, and now you have a seasoned performer with an exceptional voice and style. Her name is Katherine Penfold. She is talented, charming and definitely going places in the music business.

Originally a folk singer/songwriter from Nova Scotia, Katherine has graced many Manitoba stages over the years. She has developed a passion for a variety of different musical genres branching to Funk, Jazz and R&B. Katherine has begun to pave her way into the hearts of musicians, such as Winnipeg saxophonist Walle Larsson, composer/pianist Ron Paley and other artists throughout Canada.

She recorded her first solo album after winning $25,000 in a singer/songwriter competition put on by GROOVE FM out of Winnipeg, in 2007.

At 22, Katherine has had airplay on CBC Radio, and is now expanding to GROOVE FM 99.1, having written and co-written two songs for Groove Lounge Volume 1. With the success of the first volume, raising money for Hunger for Hope, she is now co-writing with Walle Larsson to help wrap up Volume 2 at the same time as completing her own debut pop/jazz album, soon to be released this March!

She is influenced by a variety of artists, including Barbra Streisand, Anne Murray, Ella Fitzgerald and Bette Midler.

At the Glesby Centre, Katherine will be bringing her unique new blend of Blues/Jazz, Soul and Pop music that has been exciting audiences across the Prairies!

As of this writing, there are only 25 tickets left for this performance so act quickly. Call our box office at 239-4848 to get your seats now.

Fiddle the night away

Everything Fitz

If you love fiddle music and enjoy high energy then you are about to experience one of the finest family touring groups on the Canadian music circuit.

Everything Fitz is the Fitzgerald family band from Bancroft, Ont., and features the high-energy fiddling and percussive step dancing of four of Canada’s finest young musicians. With roots in the Canadian old-time fiddle tradition, their unique stage show combines a variety of musical styles — everything from Celtic, bluegrass and western swing, to entertaining novelty tunes and choreographed step dance routines. The sounds of the East Coast, French-Canadian, Texas-style and old-time are combined with Ottawa Valley-style step dancing to bring you a high energy and heartwarming performance.

Three of the family members, Julie, Kerry and Tom, are all champion fiddlers and provide intricate three-part fiddle harmonies as well as solo improvisations on fiddle and mandolin. An audience favourite is the award-winning step dancing routines performed by all four siblings. With outstanding musicianship, dance and humour, Everything Fitz presents a stunning performance to audiences across Canada. Let me emphasize again that these performers are outstanding! So call our box office today or order your tickets online at www.glesbycentre.com

And remember you can check our website and see video clips and hear sound clips of all the performers that are performing here.

Concert Hour Ballet Tour for 2009

Date: Nov. 8, 7 p.m.

Tickets: adults $15, students $10; children 12 and under $10

And finally, a reminder that we have the ideal Christmas memory builder for your family. We have once again booked the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School of Dance for a family performance. The dancers are from the senior division and will be doing sets from a number of feature performances, including “The Nutcracker,” which has delighted Christmas audiences for years.

We had rave reviews from everyone that came last year. The costumes were spectacular and what amazed me was how many parents came with their little ones, all dressed up for a special date. All throughout the show, the kids were just mesmerized! So please book early.
