Some found the podium, some were just happy to compete.
Portage Collegiate Institute had a number of athletes at the Manitoba High School Athletic Association’s provincial track-and-field championships in Winnipeg over the weekend and a few ended up returning with medals in hand.
Portage Collegiate’s junior varsity and varsity girls teams both picked up zone banners a couple of weeks ago at their respective Zone tournaments and brought the same level of competition to the provincial weekend.
JV athlete Chanel Cabak won the bronze medal in the 400m with a time of 1:00.47, while teammate Erin Owens brought home two medals. Owens won bronze in the jv girls 1500m with a time of 4:59.21 and a silver in the 3000m at 10:43.58. One more individual girl brought home a couple of medals as Devon Borody won bronze medals in both the long jump (4.88m) and the jv girls discus with a 25.93m throw.
The jv girls medley team won bronze (Cabak/Owens/Hayley Adams and Alyssa McLeod) with a time of 4:27.00 before the jv girls 4x400 team (Hayley Adams/Reegan Vanstone/Owens and Cabak) captured bronze with their time of 4:27.89.
The varsity girls team also brought home some hardware from provincials. Simone Crevier won the bronze medal in the varsity girls 1500m with a time of 5:09.42, and the silver medal in the 3000m with a time of 11:25.08. The varsity girls medley relay featured Faith Buhler, Tee-tee Appah, Maegan Inman and Simone Crevier and they brought home a bronze medal with a time of 4:30.75.
The jv boys only managed to bring home one medal. It was in the jv boys 4x400m relay when James McBurney, Duncan Hodgson, Ian McCutchin and Jared Vachon won the silver medal with a time of 3:50.12.
The tournament ran Thursday to Saturday in Winnipeg.
