Trojans take out Jimmies for first WWAC win
All it took was a little home field confidence.
Portage Collegiate notched their first win of the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference season Thursday night when the Trojans held on for a 2-1 victory over St. James at Rotary Republic Park in Portage la Prairie to improve to 1-1-1 this season.
“We played great we just couldn’t capitalize on everything,” says Trojans head coach, Chad Green, who felt the boys had a much better first half compared to the second. “The second half we got tired, fatigued, and scrambled a little but we held out for the victor.”
The Trojans notched both of their goals in the first half of the game as Aiden Muirhead and Shawn Green both found twine to get the home team out front. The Jimmies pressed hard in the second half to try and find an equalizer but PCI’s defence proved to be strong enough to withstand the assault. PCI keeper Rodrigo Rodriguez turned away a few strong shots from St. James to help his team to victory.
“They were pressing hard at the end or our effort level dropped off,” adds Green. “I’m not sure which it totally was but we did get away from our game plan of keeping possession and started kicking the ball away and chasing which can lead to issues.”
The Trojans are back on the pitch Friday evening when the boys welcome MCI Blues to Rotary Republic Park. Green’s hopeful the boys can muster enough energy to pull out another victory as this will be their third game of the week.
