It was totally worth the trek.
Two Portage Judoka fighters returned from Edmonton, Alta., with medals after competing at the Edmonton International over the weekend.
“It was a good showing from our fighters, and really educational,” says coach, Brian Case. “Travis Stevens is a 3-time Olympian and silver medalist who put on a clinic on the Friday afternoon which Isabella McLean attended. She then competed on Saturday in the introduction to competition level category where she received a participation medal.”
Portage fighter Wade Campbell went 3-1 through the -81kg Senior Men’s Novice division on Sunday. His final match of the tournament was for the bronze medal and he managed to power through for a spot on the podium.
McLean took in the clinic Friday afternoon and was on the mat competing later on. She ended up bringing back a participation medal and a lot of knowledge of how larger events work, as nearly 850 fighters took in the tournament at the West Edmonton Mall.
Case is hopeful his fighters will use this experience as they head to larger events in the future.
