The field was chock-full of stiff competition but it was an incredible learning experience for the players.
Portage Pitbulls' players with the Manitoba Selects football teams returned from the sixth annual Pigskin Classic in San Antonio, Texas, as winners after going up against some of the best teams in North America.
“The whole program was an incredible experience for the players,” says Pitbulls' board secretary, Corrine Pratt. “A lot of the U15 kids are now preparing for the U16 provincial team, so all this experience will definitely benefit them there. It’s been a great winter for them for sure.”
Pitbulls Kaiden Banfield, Shawn Green, Kyler Banfield, Brock Miller, Jayden Shindle and Colby Irwin all took part in the U15 festivities, while Lelend Gabriel and Grayson Pratt both played as part of the U13 team.
The U13 team was the only team to come away with a victory while down south. The boys took on the Leduc Spartans in their first game and came away with a 30-7 win before getting shutout 46-0 by the Dallas Eagles.
“The Dallas team had some fast players and was a very good team,” says Grayson Pratt. “It was a really cool time, especially when we won our game. It was all football down there. The atmosphere was so cool and I really learned a lot during the training leading up to the games.”
The U15 team played the Chihuahua Broncos from Mexico and lost 30-0 in their opening match. Then the following day the boys played the Sask Selects and lost 30-14. The boys worked hard but their competition was a little too strong to come away with a win.
There were four categories at the Pigskin Classic, U10, U12, U14, and U16.
