It was a tough road but girls finished strong to capture the rural title.
The Central Plains Capitals returned to Portage la Prairie as champions after taking down the Pembina Valley Hawks 7-2 in the championship final at the Female Bantam AAA Rural Provincial Championships held March 3-5 in Garson, Man.
The Caps went 2-0-1 through the round robin, taking out Westman South 2-1 to open the tournament Friday night. The girls’ next challenge was Interlake, who they shutout 4-0 Saturday morning before tying the Yellowhead Chiefs in a scoreless back-and-forth game.
The Caps found themselves in the semifinal match against Eastman. Capital Oceane Asham was determined to lead her team to the title game with four goals against Eastman. Tyla Turnbull scored the game-winner for the Caps on the power play in the second period to make it a 5-4 final and advance to the championship.
Kylyn Shindle and Brooke Legault were flying in the final against Pembina Valley. Both ladies finished the night with 4 points, Legault had two goals and two assists while Shindle finished with a goal and three assists. It was a one-sided game as the powerhouse Caps finished off the Hawks 7-2 to snag the banner.
The Caps now await the winner of the Female Bantam AA City Championships which are taking place in Winnipeg this week. They host the overall provincial championship match between the city and the rural winners at Stride Place Mar. 16-18.
