The girls will have to shake off the loss quick with one more game in sight.
The Portage Collegiate Institute Saints varsity basketball team will have a chance at third place after falling 43-36 to Kelvin in the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference Tier 2 semifinal Wednesday night in Winnipeg.
“We were up almost the whole game but we couldn’t finish the Clippers off,” says head coach, Bill Marsh. ”Both teams played hard the full 40 minutes and I’m incredibly proud of the girls’ effort. They are pretty disappointed, as you can imagine, but we have to shake the disappointment off quickly as we are back at it Friday night.”
The Saints controlled the play for most of the game, pressuring the Clippers with their defense and forcing turnovers. Things changed in the second half when the Clippers started to sink most of their shots to take the lead. Even with a strong crowd who made the trip from Portage to cheer on the girls, the Saints couldn’t rally back to book a ticket to the final.
The Saints won’t have an easy match in the third-place game as the first place Shaftesbury Titans fell to fourth place Tec Voc, setting up a 2 vs. 4 championship final and a 1 vs. 3 third-place match.
The Saints and Titans get going Friday evening in Winnipeg.
