It couldn’t have been a better day for a derby.
The Portage Wildlife Club was thrilled with the turnout they had at their inaugural ice fishing derby Sunday of the Louis Riel long weekend at Delta Beach.
“It turned out a lot better than we were expecting,” says PWC board member, Matt Moran. “The weather was great and people really had a fun time. It ran through the majority of the day and we had a walleye winner and a pike winner. We also handed out a lot of door prizes as well.”
Over 200 people took part in the fishing derby on Lake Manitoba. Finn Carrier ended up with the largest walleye, which was measured over 25 inches long while Rose Mousseau took the top spot for pike fishing with a 31-inch monster. The Portage Wildlife Club is looking forward to hosting more outdoor events in the future.
“We’re trying to get some more things up and running this year, and this was definitely one of our biggest events to date,” says Moran. “We’re really hoping to expand on it. All of the funds raised at the event went right back to the community as well so we’re still just looking to provide some outdoor fun to the community.”
Navaeh McKellar caught the second largest walleye, Josh Bullock took third place. Dustin Poschenrieder had the second place pike, Winston Okemow finished third.
