Not the start they were hoping for.

The Central Plains Capitals were downed 5-2 to Westman in the opening game of their Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League quarterfinal playoff match Wednesday night in Hartney.

The girls found themselves down 4-2 after the first 20 minutes. Amy Klippenstein and Maegan Inman were the Caps goal scorers in the first. Central Plains’ goaltender Isabell Reutter had a tough night between the pipes allowing 4 goals in seven shots and her night was done after the final marker. Ella Wiebe came in to replace Reutter and stopped all 12 shots she faced to give the Caps a chance at a comeback.

An empty-net goal would be the only goal in the final 40, as the girls couldn’t find a way to tie the game up. The Caps can take solace in the fact that going into the game they were shutout for over 120 minutes versus by Wildcats in their final regular season match-ups. It starts with the goaltender out a slow start can be the difference maker for clubs in the playoffs.

Game two is Saturday afternoon in Portage la Prairie. The puck drops between the Caps and Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. at the BDO Centre.
