High-performance cars will be tearing it up on the lake again this year.
The Fire on Ice Racing Tour Championship is coming to dazzle fans and car enthusiasts in Portage la Prairie February 17-18 as part of the Louis Riel weekend festivities going on at Stride Place.
“Racing gets going at noon and we’ll go until we complete our circuits,” says ice-racing director, Jordan Sharples. “We have enough snow for safety in the sharper turns and people are really looking forward to the event. The drivers are always excited to come out too, and spectators really seem to enjoy watching as well.”
Around 25 cars make the trip out to Portage to take part in the event that runs all afternoon on the west side of Island Park Bridge. The ice racing track will be a little farther away than in previous years as this year the pond hockey championship is also being played on the lake
“I’m really excited to see the players playing on the lake this year while the racing is happening,” adds Sharples. “It’s just really great that we’re getting some good use out of this lake in the winter time. People are allowed to watch on the ice but remain a good amount away from the track.”
Spectators are welcome to take a closer look at some of the cars after all the racing is complete.
