The Westpark Royals booked a spot to the provincial "A" varsity boys volleyball championships in Brandon, Man., after finishing first in their pool at Regionals November 18, in Warren, Man.
“The boys are starting to believe that they are a true contender for the provincial title,” says Royals’ head coach, Merrill Friesen. “The goal was to get to regionals – and they accomplished that – but the way we played in the tournament showed me they can go all the way if they play to the best of their ability.”
The Royals finished first in their pool after a busy day of volleyball, earning them an immediate placement into the provincial championship tournament. The boys went undefeated through round robin play taking out Rosenort 2-1, Fisher Branch in straight sets, and Wawanesa 2-1. Westpark ended up facing off against Rosenort again in the final, winning in straight sets to grab a third place ranking heading into the provincial tourney.
“The sets we lost at regionals were because of our sloppy play,” admits Friesen. “Not to take anything away from the teams we faced, because they’re talented teams, but once the boys decided to play the way they can we were almost unstoppable.”
Rivers Rams are playing host to the provincial tournament November 30, December 1 and 2 and have partnered with Brandon University. Friesen adds the tournament will be held at the University and he’s excited the boys will get to experience it.
