Peaking at the perfect time.

Portage Collegiate Institute’s varsity girl’s volleyball team won their first West Winnipeg Athletic Conference Tier 1 Championship Thursday night in Winnipeg when they swept the Westwood Warriors in three straight sets.

“The girls played amazing in the championship,” says Derek Casper, Saints head coach. “We had a couple heartbreaks the past couple years where we came up short, but this year we watched some video and went in with a game plan on how to expose Westwood’s weaknesses. It paid off and we came out with the win.”

The Saints won 25-17, 26-24, and 25-20 to send the Warriors packing. The win earns the Saints a spot at the AAAA provincial championship later this month. Casper feels they’re heading in at the right time.

“We’re getting better and better right now and we just need to focus on game planning,” says Casper. “We can take a break on skill development and just focus on how to beat our opponents.”

The Saints play their first provincial match Saturday, November 25, against an opponent who has yet to be determined.
