A trip to Florida means it was a pretty decent season.

Portage la Prairie golfer Owen Gillespie has earned himself a trip to the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) Boston Pizza National Championship at Reunion Resort Golf Course in Kissimmee, Fla., next week.

“It was a good summer for me,” says Gillespie. “I played really well and met a lot of my goals and now I get the reward to go to the national final.”

The 16-year-old Portage native will be representing Manitoba as a Juvenile after coming in the top 5 in the province during MJT play this season. Officially, Gillespie finished fourth in points with 887.50, in comparison, Eric Strick of Winnipeg finished first with 1,360.00. He had three top 3 finishes at MJT events to highlight his 2017 and feels by doing so he's achieved one of his goals.

“I feel I played really consistently and that was really important too,” adds Gillespie. “I've golfed every day at the Portage Golf Club for years now and it's really helped me get to where I am now.”

Gillespie is heading in hoping to put three days of consistent golf together for a strong showing. The tournament runs November 9 to 11 with players getting a practice round on Thursday.
