It’s been an exciting first month in town for the Rotary Club of Portage’s latest exchange student.

Daniela Zilinska arrived at the end of August, just in time to kick off her Grade 12 school year at Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI).

“I’m having a great time here it’s really been amazing,” notes the Banska Bystrica, Slovakia native. “I’m really thankful for everyone who have helped my dreams to travel come true.”

Along with meeting other students in Manitoba who are currently involved with the Rotary exchange program, Zilinska has been camping and took part in the Dirt Dash held last month.

The Grade 12 student will be travelling to Churchill, Man., later this year before heading west to the Rockies in the Spring.

Much like life back home, Zilinska hopes to join the Saints’ basketball team for the upcoming season, however the biggest cultural difference she’s noticed is how Canadians eat their meals. Noting how in Slovakia it's customary to eat larger meals at lunch while dinners are much smaller.
