Southport recreation facility to open this month

The nearly two year operation to upgrade Southport’s old fitness facility is nearly complete.
A state of the art, open-concept, fully accessible fitness facility will be opening its doors to the public later this month, equipped with a plethora of new features.
“Recreation is becoming more important in everyone’s lives and it’s something we felt we needed to upgrade,” said Colby Orchard, manager of recreation at Central Plains RecPlex in regards to the facility’s renovations. “It’s a state of the art facility with a lot of new features such as a climbing wall, walking track, daycare and a food kiosk. At the same time keeping a lot of the old features that people liked.”
Monthly and annual memberships are available for adults, families, students, seniors and residents of Southport to utilize the rock climbing wall, indoor and outdoor tracks, fitness and weight room, tennis courts and a full gymnasium.
The rec centre will be holding its official grand opening Nov. 15 from 2-6 p.m. Admission to the event is free and individuals and includes contests and challenges with an opportunity to win a one year membership to the facility. Sawmall Tea & Coffee Co., the company running the food kiosk, will be sampling its menu.
The facility also houses a daycare and bowling alley, and offers rental opportunities for birthdays and other events.
