IIU investigating injury during Portage arrest

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after an individual was injured during an RCMP arrest in Portage la Prairie.

RCMP advised the IIU that on the morning of September 20, an officer noticed a vehicle driving erratically and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle turned off the road and into a ditch, at which point the three occupants exited the vehicle and began to run. The constable caught one of the fleeing suspects and, in the course of the arrest, both fell to the ground. The individual was handcuffed without further incident and escorted to the police vehicle, where he complained of feeling unwell.

The suspect was taken to the detachment and examined by emergency medical services, then to Portage la Prairie hospital for x rays, where it was determined he had a broken right clavicle.

As this incident involved a serious injury, the IIU is required to investigate. Since the investigation is ongoing, no further details will be provided at this time.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
