Active Aging Week was rung in with the official launch of the outdoor exercise equipment Oct.1 at the green space at River Road and Crescent Road East.

“It’s been a long project with a lot people involved and it’s nice to get it completed,” said Shelley Caskey, executive director of Portage Service for Seniors. “We’re promoting active living with seniors but we’re happy to give it to the whole community.”

There are eight pieces of equipment placed throughout the Crescent Lake walking path, with four at River Road, two at 16th Street SW and at Roe Street.

“It’s a really nice addition to our community and it lends itself to making our community healthier,” said Irvine Ferris, mayor of Portage. “We’re very pleased to see this happen today and are looking forward to it being used by people in the future.”

All equipment comes complete with instructional signage outlining proper and safe use of the machines.
