The Denver Broncos will use the franchise tag on wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, according to multiple reports.

During the past three seasons, all with quarterback Peyton Manning, Thomas has compiled 4,483 yards on 297 receptions and 35 touchdowns. He has not missed a game since 2011.

John Elway told the Denver Post at last month's scouting combine that the Broncos would issue a franchise tender to Thomas if the sides could not negotiate a long-term extension. Elway has said he could see a scenario where Thomas got the franchise tag and then the two sides reached an agreement at some point after free agency begins March 10.

The tag means Thomas will count almost $13 million against next year's salary cap.

He has three straight seasons of having more than 1,400 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns -- stats matched only by former wide receivers Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison.

The Broncos' move probably signals the end of Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas' stay in Denver. Julius Thomas also is on the verge of becoming a free agent.

"Orange Julius" already has rejected a five-year, $40 million offer from the team.
