Southport Sapphires gymnastics results
Participating in its second event this season, the Southport Sapphires Gymnastics Club hosted its annual competition on Feb. 21 at Southport Rec Centre. Nine Sapphires gymnasts competed in six different age categories at the event, earning five podium finishes.
“I know I can speak for our entire coaching staff when I say we are very proud of each and every one of our gymnasts that competed,” said Sapphires coach Tonya Thompson. “They have all worked very hard and it shows in everything they accomplished.”
“It is always a very nervous time to get up in front of a crowd and judges but they all were able to keep the nerves in check and come out with very impressive performances,” Thompson said.
The event featured three levels of competition: intermediate, pre-provincial and advanced. The Sapphires had four gymnasts participating in the intermediate level and five in the advanced competition.
The Sapphires' results in the intermediate level are as follows:
Czarina Castellano participated in the 10-year-old age category. Castellano finished fourth-place in all four events she competed in, scoring 6.05 in vault, 6.75 on the uneven bars, 8.325 in the beam, 7.875 on the floor and 29.00 all-around.
Kate Moggey took part in the 11-year-old competition, finishing fifth in vault (7.65), first in uneven bars with (8.15), second in beam (8.675), fifth on the floor (7.95). Moggey finished fourth-place all-around scoring 32.425.
Lauren Blight and Shay Lyall both competed in the 13-and-over age category. Blight earned a silver medal for her all-around score (32.075). Blights came third in vault (7.50), second in uneven bars (7.60), second in beam (8.70) and second on the floor(8.275).
Lyall narrowly missed the podium with a 28.625 all-around score, good for fourth-place. Lyall came fourth in vault (6.20), third in uneven bars (7.10), fourth in beam (7.925) and fourth in floor (7.40).
Five Sapphires took part in the advanced level competition. Their results are as follows:
Participating in her first advanced level competition, Taylor Yanke earned a silver medal in the nine- and 10-year-old age category with an all around score of 32.70. She finished seventh in vault (7.75), fourth in uneven bars (8.30), fourth in beam (7.90) and second in floor (8.75).
Abby Davidson came away with an eighth-place finish (28.425) in the 11- and 12-year-old competition. She finished eighth in vault (6.00), sixth in uneven bars (7.80), eighth in beam (6.875) and seventh in floor (7.75).
Kyndree Majoros took silver in the 13-year-old age category with an all-around score of 33.70. She came third in vault (8.55), first in uneven bars (8.65), second in Beam (7.75) and second in Floor (8.75).
Two Sapphires gymnasts competed in the 14-and-older age category, and they finished alongside each other atop the podium. Joelle Jobin's 34.85 all-around score earned the gold medal. Jobin was second in vault (8.75), first in uneven bars (8.35), first in beam (9.05) and first in floor (8.70).
Teammate Cassie Emberly took silver with an all-around score of 33.275. Emberly finished first in vault (9.10), third in uneven bars (7.675), second in beam (8.50) and third in floor (8.00).
The Southport Sapphires next event is a year-end display, which features all levels of gymnasts, at Southport on Mar. 18.
The Sapphires' next competitive event is the provincials, which take place in Morden, Man., from April 10 to 12.
