Trade in your LBD for an LWD (Little White Dress) this summer
Nothing says summer style like a breezy white dress or crisp pair of white denim jeans. But the seemingly endless number of commandments on how and when to wear the non-colour can be daunting.
And with so few hot, sunny summer days available to us, there’s no time to deliberate. So, we asked Vancouver-based style expert Nadia Albano to break down the dos and don’ts, and tell us how to wear white now.
First, some ground rules—and there are no exceptions here: Don’t wear black or coloured panties under white pants or a dress (sounds like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how often women make this mistake!). “Opt for seamless nude-toned panties instead,” advises Albano.
To the same end, she says it’s crucial when shopping for white garments to make sure they’re lined. “White shows everything, therefore lining is a must!” This goes for pants, skirts, dresses and even jackets.
Those tips aside, you can pretty much break every other rule you’ve heard about white clothing—including wearing it after Labour Day. And how about as a wedding guest? Albano says that rule, too, has gone out the window. “It’s totally acceptable to wear white,” she says, “as long as it’s not a ball gown. A white knee-length cocktail dress combined with blush, coral and turquoise accessories is a very chic look for a summer wedding.”
Pairing brights with white is a classic combo that will never go out of style, but Albano also suggests a chic alternative: Try accessorizing your white outfits with subtle metallics and grey and nude tones to add simple, understated interest within the same colour palette.
The white-on-white look is more popular than ever this season. The key to pulling it off is mixing textures, says Albano. “Combining sheer, silk and satin fabrics adds dimension to a monotone outfit.”
The all-white trend even extends to footwear.
To keep the look gorgeous instead of granny, Albano recommends investing in well made shoes (stay away from plastic and cheap-looking fabrics!). Look for modern details such as metal tips or studs, cut-outs and chain or jewelled ankle straps.
With these tips in tow, looking white hot this summer is a breeze.Follow @SunMediaLife
