A stretch of road on 5th St. SE between Dufferin Ave. and Queen Ave. is open once again, ending a several-month detour on the street.

Work was being completed to fix the City wastewater and drainage system, which was more than 80 years old.

The wastewater sewer renewal project, which began in the summer was expected to be completed by October, according to city officials and crew members.

The project is said to cost more than $321,000 as Coun. Irvine Ferris said the City felt it was a good idea to fix the sewer line and pave the road at the same time.

"That street right now if you drive on it it's like a three coupon ride. We have the paving overlay money as of last council meeting set aside so it only makes sense to do the sewer line reconstruction right now and then do the paving overlay and the hopefully we shouldn't have to rip that up for many, many years," said Ferris in an interview with the Daily Graphic in June.

Paving still needs to be completed on the street, however the repairs have been completed.

More to come...
