Sandy Bay First Nation, located north of Portage la Prairie, off Highway 50, is getting ready to hold its 33rd Annual Traditional Powwow celebration this weekend.
The event, which is open to the public, features traditional powwow dancing performances running: Friday evening starting at 7 p.m; Saturday at 1 p.m. and again at 7 p.m.; and Sunday at 1 p.m.
“It’s a traditional powwow; everyone gets a daily honourarium,” said Charmaine Beaulieu, a co-ordinator on the Sandy Bay powwow organizing committee.
There will also be snacks and a range of vendor tables for visitors to take in, including craft displays.
Some of the tasty food choices include traditional bannock, as well as corn-on-the-cob, and of course burgers and fries. There will also be Indian Tacos.
“We have all kinds of a activities this weekend,” said Beaulieu.
She said in previous years visitors have come from across Canada — from Halfax to B.C. — and from across the U.S. to take in the festivities.
“We welcome all visitors, each and every year,” said Beaulieu.
The powwow event starts Fri., Aug. 24 and runs through to Sun., Aug. 26.
There will also be a variety of drumming groups.
On Saturday at 11 p.m., a fireworks display is also planned.
As well, the third annual Ka-we-kwe-don-gak Powwow Auction takes place on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Visitors will be able to take in the fourth annual Potato Dance Competition as well.
The weekend powwow celebration is also an opportunity for Sandy Bay to increase awareness about its heritage in Manitoba.
The theme of this year’s powwow is “Building Bridges and Sharing Values of the Youth and Elders.”
Both Sandy Bay members and many visitors from the outside community will all be able to enjoy the many festivities during the powwow celebration.
