The Portage Phillies played twice, but completed three games on Monday.
Portage turned out victorious in all three cases, taking wins of 6-4 and 6-0 over the visiting Notre Dame Clubs at Republic of Manitobah Park to wrap their Winnipeg Fastball League season.
Off of it, it was announced that the Phillies and Vipers wouldn't be completing their June 7 game this coming Thursday. The Phillies led 8-5 when weather caused the postponement of the game.
The three wins banked Monday pushed the team into a first-place tie with the Peguis Braves to complete the season. However, Peguis will retain the top seed when the league playoffs take place in Stonewall this weekend.
In the first game against Notre Dame, Gregg Waldvogel struck out five, including a pair in the top of the seventh with the tying run at the plate. Meanwhile, Tanner Waldvogel and Troy Mutch each plated a pair of runs for Portage.
The Phillies jumped out to an early lead with a pair in the first. Notre Dame grasped a 3-2 lead in the top of the third, but Portage surged ahead with four in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
In Game 2, Neil Finch tossed a complete-game shutout while striking out four.
Landon Thomson had three hits for a Phillies attack that racked up three runs in the top of the fourth to cement the lead and eventual victory.
Coach and second baseman Rob Olson was glad to see the team respond well after not playing together for nearly a month.
"It went well," said Olson. "Those are two big wins.
"I'm very impressed."
On Saturday, Portage will begin play at 11 a.m. against the third-ranked opponent. The team has yet to be determined, as the Stealers (14-3-2) and Farmers of Plum Coulee (14-4-1) have a makeup game to be played Tuesday night in Landmark. The Clubs will also play in the double-knockout championship bracket.
