The Westman Wolverines dropped the opening game of the year.
The Wolverines (0-1) were close, but couldn't quite come back on the visiting East Side Eagles in Brandon on Saturday.
The Wolverines led 8-7 after the first quarter, but a huge second quarter for the Eagles had them up 32-15 at the break. The Wolverines trimmed the lead to just two in the third quarter, but East Side cemented the game with a 10-point fourth.
Portage's Danton Nagorski contributed offensively for the Wolverines, hauling in a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Seth Hume. Nagorski also picked up a 15-yard reception to finish with 32 yards on the day.
Brendon Brydges, also of Portage, is in his third year with the team, and is serving as a captain.
The Wolverines will resume play Saturday in Winnipeg when they play the St. Vital Mustangs at 3 p.m.
