The cold, wet weather conditions couldn’t keep the 136th annual Long Plain First Nation Annual Competition Powwow from taking place.

However, the wet grounds did force the powwow to be moved inside the local arena for the first part of Saturday.

Annette Whitehawk, committee member for the powwow, said the yearly celebration brings people not only from Manitoba, but also Canada and the United States.

“The powwow brings people in the community together and people from afar to our community,” she said. “We have visitors from Seattle, Washington and many other areas of the United States. In Canada, we have visitors from Ontario, British Columbia and many other provinces.”

The wide spread popularity comes from the great reputation Long Plain has been building over the years.

“Long Plain is known for having the biggest outdoor powwow in Manitoba – dancers and attendance wise,” said Whitehawk. “The reason for high attendance is because the event brings people back home. People from our community come back specifically to attend this event. We have built a great reputation.
