Wilson shines at Summer Games
Daniel Wilson had one of Team Central's top performances at last week's Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games in Swan River.
Wilson, 14, nabbed three medals, a gold and a pair of bronzes, at the Games. Competing in the junior male division, Wilson was first in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:18.31, though he was the only competitor in the event. He picked up the bronzes against some tough competition, posting final times of 37.47 in the 50m backstroke and 1:18.82 in the 100m individual medley.
The young swimmer was thrilled to have been able to bring home some hardware.
"It was good," said Wilson, who said he also enjoyed getting to meet swimmers from all around the region.
Wilson doesn't consider any of the above events as his premier ones, though.
"My two best swims are the 50m free(style) and the 50m (butter)fly," said Wilson. "I didn't do as well as I wanted to in either of them, in the finals, at least, but I did good in the prelims."
Wilson was fourth both in the 50m free (30.98) and 50m butterfly (37.07).
Wilson felt he could have done better in both finals. He said in the freestyle event, he was done in by one poor moment, while the butterfly final was one of the last events of the day and he didn't have as much left in the tank as he'd hoped.
"In the 50m free, I just had a bad turn, which makes the difference of half-a-second, which makes the difference of the race," said Wilson. "In the 50m fly, I was in all the finals that day and they were back-to-back races.
"The fly takes a lot of energy and I didn't have much left. I was up against some more competition and I went too hard in the first 25m and didn't have enough for the way back."
