A water main break has kept a portion of 4th Street NE closed for most of Wednesday.

Kelly Braden, director of operations for the City of Portage la Prairie, said the break happened early Wednesday morning.

No homes in the area appear to be affected by the break.

"The water main break happened here and went straight up," said Braden. "We're not aware if there are any damages to properties in the area."

Braden said he is unsure why the pipe broke, but it could have to do with weak points in the pipe being affected by pressure surges.

"If a pressure surge finds a weak spot in the pipe, it could break the pipe."

The section of 4th Street NE is set to reopen later this afternoon.
