Blaze blasted by Brunswick

The Portage Blaze were looking ahead to Lake of the Woods, but in the process, looked a little lost in the woods on Tuesday.

With a tournament in Kenora, Ont. coming up this weekend, the Blaze (3-4-4) were handled 4-1 by the Brunswick Sting in Winnipeg to extend their Winnipeg Women's Soccer League first division winless streak to five games.

The Blaze fell behind just five minutes into the contest, but limited the damage to just the one goal before halftime. However, the Sting got two quick goals to start the second half and added another soon after to build the lead to 4-0.

Terri Mauws tallied her first career goal to get the Blaze on the board and prevent the shutout, though.

Portage will face non-league opponents in the Wisergals, Chicas, and Minnedosa in group play at this weekend's tournament in the neighbouring province.

The Blaze will return to league play July 25 when the PTSC Extreme come to Republic of Manitobah Park at 7:30 p.m.

More to come.
