Summer games kicked off Sunday

Young local athletes participated in time tests in swimming and running during a Triathlon training session at the PCU Centre in Portage la Prairie back in March, when they were trying to qualify for the Manitoba Summer Games in Swan Valley in July. The Summer Games kick off this weekend on July 15.
The Manitoba Power Smart Summer Games kicked off in Swan Valley on Sunday.
The participants include athletes from the Central Plains and Portage la Prairie area as well.
The Games are held every two years and will alternate between summer and winter sporting events.
Each set of Games will involve as many as 7,500 athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.
Participation in the Power Smart Manitoba Games starts with regional try outs. Regional teams of out 200 athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff then move on to participate in the Provincial Finals.
Central Plains young athletes also were in Portage la Prairie previously training to compete in the games, and to improve their times to qualify to participate in the games.
The Summer Games run from July 15 to 21.
Athletes take part in the following events: Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Cycling, Golf, Sailing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, and Triathlon.
