A major focus of summers in Portage is housing and apartment developments. There are some large developments that are currently in the early phases of their life.

Kinelm Brookes, development officer and building inspector with the Portage la Prairie Planning District, said some of the infrastructure projects happening around the city are leading up to bigger housing developments.

"It's up to developers to pick a feasible area for development," he said. "They usually pick an area with good infrastructure and road system in place, or soon to be in place."

If a good infrastructure isn't in place already, some developers do a pre-housing phase where the infrastructure in the area is fixed before construction on homes begin.

One of the large development projects underway in Portage is on Meighen Avenue.

"The north side of Meighen Avenue between Bridge and River Road is seeing a big change," said Brookes. "That area will be a big development with single and multi-family homes being built."
