Kitson's: cars may be affected by the heat too 0

By Robin Dudgeon, Portage Daily Graphic

Portagers need to be conscious with rising temperature not only to protect themselves from the heat but to extend the same courtesy to their cars, which can also feel the effects of the heat.

Jeff Murphy, owner of Kitson's Service Station, said that a vehicle's engine and transmission can suffer severe damage because of the effects of the heat.

"The biggest thing with the heat is to make sure that your cooling system is working correctly, your antifreeze condition is good, your cooling fan is good, belts, hoses, et cetera because heat on an engine can cause major damage," said Murphy.

The same applies to the transmission, especially if you are towing something like a trailer or a fifth wheel.

Drivers should check their fluids and tires as they can all be affected by the heat and make sure to stay alert to unusual smells, steam, or a rise in the temperature gauge.
