Portage Emergency Services responded to a hydro pole fire Wednesday morning that saw approximately 145 residents of the RM of Portage la Prairie without power.

Lightning struck a hydro pole at the intersection of Road 28 W and Road 60 N at approximately 10:30 a.m. and knocked out the power.

Fire, RCMP, and Hydro crews were on the scene just after 11:00 a.m. to see the top of the pole had burnt due to the lightning strike. At that point the road was closed because crews were concerned that the lines would fall into the intersection.

While mostly rural customers were affected, Sunnyside Colony was also without power on Wednesday. Of the 145 customers affected 100 of those customers had power back by 12:22 p.m., while the remaining 45 had power restored that evening.
