The Portage Phillies took on the Jets and Peguis Braves Thursday night at the John Blumberg Softball Complex.

Going into the doubleheader, the Phillies had played fewer games than the teams above them due to postponements.

It was a great opportunity for the team to make up ground in the standings against the upper-elite teams in the Winnipeg Fastball League.

In game one, the Phillies took on the Jets and put on a dominating performance, winning 13-2.

Pitcher Gregg Waldvogel said the Phillies ability to get an early lead was crucial to winning the game.

"We got off to a quick lead and took them out of the game very early," he said. "Their starting pitcher was pulled and we were able to continue that hitting against their bullpen."

A reason for the Phillies great hitting could be due to the great pitching they have faced over the past few weeks.

"We've faced great pitchers lately," said Waldvogel. "I think that has helped our hitting game."

Dan Fedak, Jay Dewis and Troy Mutch led the Phillies offence, as they all homered against the Jets.
