St. Claude School Complex's splash on the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association scene this year continued on Wednesday.
Less than a week after Kalene Mangin received one of four Scholar Athlete Awards, Sarah Gobin was named the female athlete of the year for 'A'-level schools (rural schools with a population of fewer than 125 students).
Gobin helped the senior girls' volleyball team to its first Provincial 'A' Championship on the team's home court in November, earning tournament MVP honours in the process. Gobin was a graduating all-star and Zone 6 all-star, and also received an MHSAA athlete of the week award this year.
Gobin also participated in badminton and track and field.
Gobin said with so much solid competition in the division, it was a great feeling to win.
"I was actually really surprised that I won," said Gobin. "There are quite a few awesome athletes in single-A here, and I was pretty excited."
She said the award presentation was a fairly subdued affair, which she welcomed.
"The ceremony was really great," said Gobin. "It was a pretty small ceremony, so that was good.
"It wasn't too crazy. It was exactly how I hoped it would be."
Like her teammate Mangin, Gobin also recalled the Olympiens' charge to the provincial 'A' volleyball title.
"I would definitely say being provincial champions in our home gym," said Gobin. "It was great for our team and it was great for next year to look up to it and want to do the same."
Gobin especially appreciated the opportunity to take the title on home court, which the Olympiens seized.
"We had a lot of friends, family to cheer us on. It made it more fun, more enjoyable and definitely more memorable."
