Portage la Prairie resident Shelley Stewart was awarded the Independent Living Award through the Independent Living Resource Centre in Winnipeg on June 21.
Stewart was born with cerebral palsy and is not able to walk or speak, but otherwise functions well and has been able to pursue a degree of independence.
Her husband Ron Stewart said Shelley has been able to maintain an independent lifestyle and is a strong advocate for people with disabilities.
Shelley was pleased to receive the award and be recognized from ILRC and said she was "overwhelmed."
"She has worked so hard all of her life to do just what she received," said Ron. "It was great to see the recognition given to Shelley."
Awards were also given out at the event to other individuals working and offering support in the disabled community.
To be recognized for the Independent Living Award an individual needs to have been able to maintain an independent lifestyle.
Ron said Shelley is able to hire her own independent living attendants, and is able to operate her own wheelchair with the aid of today's technology.
In receiving her award, Shelley acknowledged the support she receives that allows her to live independently also.
While as her husband Ron is supportive also, Shelley is able to be independent in regulating her day-to-day activities, and to communicate effectively. She often uses a special E-Tran or Eye Gaze communication board to communicate with others.
She is also on Facebook and has been able to maintain relationships with friends far away.
"She has had people from all over the world on her Facebook congratulating her," said Ron, on Shelley's receipt of the Independent Living Award.
Modern technology has been a good way to also help Shelley maintain her independence.
Shelley said her daughter Cathrine, who is 21 years old and lives nearby, gives her great happiness in life, and she loves to visit and spend time with her.
Shelley also enjoys many things in life, including music and cooking.
"I love to try new crock pot recipes," she said.
