Smith 47th at Marathon 0

Local runner Cory Smith wasn't able to do much to prepare for the half marathon at Sunday's Manitoba Marathon in Winnipeg, but he still posted an impressive result.

Smith was 47th overall and seventh out of 175 other competitors in the male 20-24 class with a time of 1:27:46.4.

Smith said although he didn't feel his greatest, he enjoyed the day.

"During the race, not too bad," said Smith. "I was a little uncomfortable, out of shape at times.

"It was a beautiful day for the run. I couldn't ask for better conditions."

Smith said his schooling has cut his training time significantly, but he is still competing for enjoyment.

"I've had to almost stop training completely just because school ended up being much more of a commitment than I anticipated," said Smith, who has a year and a half remaining in his chartered accountant program. "I'm just doing these races a lot more for fun this year.

"I get out when I can. It's more casual. I don't have any set plan - it's when I get some free time I go out for a run or a bike or a swim."

Smith noted he'd like to have been nearer to the summit, but said significantly quicker times aren't realistic at the moment.

"I definitely would like to be quite a bit higher up there, but considering I'm not training, I can't have too high of expectations," said Smith.
